FAQs
1. I want to learn to play mahjong!! What is the best way?
We highly recommend signing up for our classes or booking private lessons with us. Learning the game takes time which is why our classes are 5 hours of instruction split over two sessions. We also recommend that if you book private lessons with us, that you book two lessons if you able to.
2. It seems like a complicated game. I’m worried I won’t get it.
We are extremely patient, methodical teachers and will ensure that you are following us every step of the way. It is our goal that every one of our students feels confident to play on their own after our classes. We are also always available for a post-class text or phone call about a game rules question! They always come up and we’re more than happy to answer questions even after our students leave us.
3. Is mahjong an expensive game to get into?
Absolutely not! There are very inexpensive tile sets out there. The only annual investment required of mahjong player is to purchase a new, annual National Mahjong League Card that comes out every April. The cost for the large print card is $15 and the small print card is $14. We recommend the slightly larger card for $15 because it’s a little easier to read. But besides your annual card, it does not have to be a big investment. A link to purchase a 2026 NMJL Card is at the bottom of our website.
4. How did Classic City Mahj come to be?
In the early Spring of 2025 when mahjong was really taking off in the Athens area, our friends asked us to teach them how to play. Then, many more people began asking us as well and the rest is history. We love teaching people how to play a game that brings people together. It brings us great joy!
5. Am I ready to attend an open play event/Mahj Night Out?
If you have had at least one mahjong class or lesson, then YES! Our open play events are not instructional, but if you have a beginner’s level grasp of the game you are good to go. We seat attendees by their experience level (beginner, intermediate, & advanced) so don’t be shy and come! They are a lot of fun! We also enjoy floating around and helping players who are newer to the game so it’s more than okay to have game rules questions at our open play events.
